Caroline Spiller, Owner/Director of Betterclean Services Exeter & Taunton

Image
"I became a Betterclean franchisee in November 2016, when I bought the Exeter and Taunton territory as a going concern.  Over the past 2 years, I have doubled the revenue and far exceeded the growth and income targets I had set myself.  Betterclean provides franchisees with robust operating systems and procedures, that have allowed me to focus my energies on building a staff team that I am proud of, on developing strong client relationships, and on delivering a service that differentiates Betterclean from other cleaning providers.  The support I have received from Head Office has been invaluable, in terms of advice on operational delivery, HR matters and business development, all of which have facilitated steady business growth.  That, combined with a friendly network of fellow franchisees, has meant that I have never felt alone when encountering challenges along the way.  Being able to work from home has given me personal flexibility, and kept my operating cost...

June 1, 2017 The latest Betterclean Services franchisee conference has introduced a host of new initiatives, continuing the brand’s exceptional development over the last 12 months. The second Network Day of the year, which took place in May in Birmingham, introduced extended training for the management teams of franchise owners, new HR support and a range of new products to deliver better results for clients and keep the network ahead of the competition. An updated version of Bliss, the company’s bespoke business management system, is also being rolled out to the network. It further enhances the automation of business functions and processes to streamline operations for each franchise owner. That will shortly be joined by a custom-built app for cleaning staff that will highlight job details and client requests before they arrive onsite. It’s being developed with direct input from franchise owners to ensure optimal performance and efficiency. ...

Shared values lead new Betterclean franchisee to take on the Chiefs!

Image
May 5, 2017 Caroline Spiller was the co-owner of one of the south-west’s leading visitor attractions, so a move into commercial cleaning for her new business venture may not have been an obvious next step. But she saw it as a natural extension of the customer service principles that have guided her entire career – and which have already seen her win a contract with the Exeter Chiefs rugby club. After steering Otterton Mill to a host of accolades over eight years alongside her husband Simon, Caroline took over the Betterclean Services Taunton and Exeter franchise in late 2016. “It might seem an unusual move from hospitality and retail to cleaning,” she said. “However, my whole career has been spent in the service industry, previously with airlines, government and education. What drives me is the delivery of excellent service, whatever the sector. And that is at the heart of the Betterclean business model.” Those shared values have quickly reaped rewards...

Betterclean Services recognised by the BFA for its franchise development

Image
April 21, 2017 Betterclean Services, the director-level commercial cleaning franchise, has been upgraded to Associate Membership of the British Franchise Association (bfa) in recognition of its sustained development and success. Associate Members have proven their franchising credentials; the bfa states that for such companies, “there will be evidence of its ability to establish a solid network” and that “the franchisor will be investing in support and development”. Fewer than 100 franchises currently hold the accreditation from the UK’s guardian body of franchising standards. Betterclean underwent a rigorous process to achieve the elevated status, including examinations of its financial stability, franchisee performance and the business support provided by head office. An anonymous survey of franchise owners was also conducted, which confirmed their satisfaction in the Betterclean network. Dan van Kuyk, managing director, said: “This is welcome acknow...

The reality of ‘guaranteed income’ franchises: the Betterclean competitive advantage

Image
February 28, 2017 Some cleaning franchises tell you they’ll ‘guarantee income’ – what they don’t say is that you’ll pay for the privilege. Practices such as paying for a contract (effectively buying a job, not developing a business), the use of small print on such deals and the actual profitability of contracts arranged by someone else can all make an attractive offer quickly turn into an ugly reality. That’s why our model is clear: franchise owners own their contracts, not head office, and negotiate directly on the terms they agree to. What we will do is provide national account customers too, meaning you win on both sides of the equation. While the prospect of guaranteed income offered by some franchisors in the commercial cleaning marketplace can be enticing, it’s vital to consider the conditions that such claims may impose. Some of these include: Accounts offered vs accounts received There may be a difference between the accounts the franchisor p...
