Exeter cleaning boss sweeps up national award by treating staff decently

Image
Treating staff decently and paying them higher wages has helped Exeter cleaning company boss, Caroline Spiller , build a million-pound business – and win a major industry award. The owner of Betterclean Services Exeter & Taunton has won a Great British Franchisee Award – the highest honour in the world of franchising – for an approach to business that ’ s making her clients and cleaners far happier than the industry norm. “ Ever since I took on the Betterclean franchise, I've been working to address the issues of low pay and poor working conditions that typify the sector,” says Caroline.   “ Cleaners make up about 5% of the UK workforce, and many employers have historically taken advantage of them, often leaving cleaners in a poverty trap.”  “ I ’ m determined to buck this trend and want to demonstrate to other cleaning providers that treating staff well is now an important facet of business success.” “ From my second year of trading, our cleane...

I would highly recommend the Betterclean franchise

In depth training at the start of the programme set me and my father on a firm foundation. Both the 5 days initial training and the 2 days supervisor training were invaluable in terms of building business knowledge and the confidence to fulfil our vision for the business. There is also ongoing support from the franchise team and their external specialised partners.  This type of support gives you peace of mind. Currently in the brand awareness stage, my father and I are well placed to conquer Derby and make a success of our new Betterclean franchise. We won our first contract within 3 weeks of marketing. We have many potential prospects waiting to sign with Derby Betterclean services. Becoming Betterclean franchisees is fulfilling our dream of owning our own business. The key to success is hard work and dedication to achieve and, following the business model process from the beginning. I would highly recommend the Betterclean franchise – it’s working for me. Always remember t...

Legal eagles’ judgement vindicated as they swap courtrooms for commercial cleaning

Solicitors and barristers are famous for cleaning up financially – but how many, like Jane and Dornford Roberts, are just as likely to be cleaning up with a mop and bucket? The couple, joint owners of a Betterclean franchise covering a huge area from Dawlish in Devon to Penzance in Cornwall, have just won the most prestigious accolade in the franchising world: a Great British Franchisee Award from whichfranchise.com. Quite how barrister Jane and solicitor Dornford ended up as cleaners has raised eyebrows among their former colleagues in the legal profession, but their £1million-a-year turnover and the 100 staff they employ suggest they made the right decision. That success, and their attitude towards their staff and clients, is what secured them the prestigious award and secured their place among the franchise world’s elite. “The main challenge we faced was moving from the specialist, solution-based, one-case-at- a-time approach required during our legal careers to the multi-la...

Triple Digit Growth in Exeter & Taunton Franchise

Image
Since the end of “Furlough” in 2021, Betterclean Services Exeter & Taunton has grown revenues well over 100% in the space of nine months, bringing them close to a £1M turnover.  Caroline Spiller, Managing Director, expects this growth rate to continue and attributes it almost entirely to treating staff really well.   “I’ve always been very proud of the high quality of our cleaning services, which has resulted in very high client retention rates and growth through word of mouth” said Caroline.  “Like many service providers, our business was almost brought to a halt when the COVID pandemic first hit and, if it hadn’t been for the Furlough scheme, we may not have survived.  Coming out of the pandemic, we decided we needed to grow faster to achieve a scale that would help us survive future economic shocks.  We realised we needed to do this by focusing on the source of our p...
